Manifest Destiny

As John L. O'Sullivan wrote, "our manifest destiny to overspread and to possess the whole continent which Providence has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and federated self-government entrusted to us." In other words, it was the idea that it was America's destiny to control the land spanning the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
